Days after his nomination for NASA was pulled by President Donald Trump, Jared Isaacman told investors in his payments company Shift4
\nthat his \u201cbrief stint in politics was a thrilling experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Isaacman said in the letter that he was resigning as CEO of Shift4, which he founded in 1999 at age 16, and will assume the role of executive chairman. He had been planning to leave the company if his nomination was confirmed by the Senate. But it never got that far.<\/p>\n
In a post on Truth Social over the weekend, Trump said that he was withdrawing Isaacman\u2019s nomination \u201cafter a thorough review of prior associations.\u201d The president didn\u2019t indicate what those associations were, though some reports have suggested that it was a reference to Isaacman\u2019s prior donations to Democrats.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven knowing the outcome, I would do it all over again,\u201d Isaacman wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n
In an episode of the All-In podcast that went live on Wednesday, Isaacman, who has close ties to Elon Musk, indicated that his past donations weren\u2019t likely the reason for Trump\u2019s decision. He noted that his donations were public long before he was nominated, and he described himself as \u201cright-leaning\u201d and a supporter of the president\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t want to play dumb on this,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think the timing was much of a coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
The timing he was referencing was Musk\u2019s official exit from his government service work at the end of May.<\/p>\n
In addition to his career in finance, Isaacman has led two private spaceflights through Musk\u2019s SpaceX, in 2021 and 2024, commanding crews on multiday trips around the Earth. Shift4 also invested $27.5 million in SpaceX, according to a 2021 filing.<\/p>\n
Musk became one of Trump\u2019s biggest backers and, until last week, was leading the administration\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with slashing the size of the federal government. With Musk\u2019s official time as a \u201cspecial government employee\u201d coming to an end because of the 130-day limit, the world\u2019s richest person has quickly turned into a vocal critic of Trump\u2019s massive tax-cut bill.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Musk ramped up his attacks on the bill that Trump is pushing Congress to pass, claiming it will condemn America to \u201cdebt slavery\u201d and urging lawmakers to \u201cKILL the BILL.\u201d A day earlier, Musk slammed what Trump has dubbed the \u201cbig, beautiful bill\u201d as a \u201cdisgusting abomination.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s decision to pull Isaacman\u2019s nomination came before Musk\u2019s latest tirade. But Musk had been distancing himself from the administration in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou got one person,\u201d Isaacman said on All-In, referring to Trump as the one making the call. He said he doesn\u2019t \u201cknow what the trigger was or wasn\u2019t\u201d and said he doesn\u2019t \u201cfault the president for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The White House didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n
At Shift4, Isaacman said in Wednesday\u2019s letter that he\u2019ll be succeeded as CEO by Taylor Lauber, who started at the company in 2018 and has been serving as president.<\/p>\n
